cinnamon – Orangette https://orangette.net Fri, 22 Jul 2016 23:53:27 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.2.2 November 6 https://orangette.net/2015/11/november-6/ https://orangette.net/2015/11/november-6/#comments Fri, 06 Nov 2015 23:22:00 +0000 This one goes out to my friend Natalie. One night early last month, she and hers were over for dinner, and I made an applesauce cake with caramel glaze for dessert. As they left, she asked about the recipe, and she’s been patiently waiting for me to post it ever since. In the intervening weeks, our kitchen faucet sprung a leak – a leak that must have actually sprung a month or two before that, because by the time we noticed it, it had thoroughly saturated all the wooden surfaces below and around it, making them buckle and curl like waves on an ocean, a special ocean that smells like rot. We called Natalie and Michael, because they are handy…

May 7 https://orangette.net/2015/05/may-7/ https://orangette.net/2015/05/may-7/#comments Thu, 07 May 2015 22:05:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2015/05/07/may-7 One Tuesday evening in March, I went somewhat accidentally to the town of Edison, Washington, and bought a pack of graham crackers. Two weeks later, I drove back deliberately, 75 miles each way, just to buy more. Thanks to Renee Bourgault and her wonderful Breadfarm, I got to tell the story, and share the recipe, on (the newly redesigned! fancy!) Saveur.com.

From now on https://orangette.net/2013/12/from-now-on/ https://orangette.net/2013/12/from-now-on/#comments Fri, 20 Dec 2013 04:35:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2013/12/20/from-now-on Our friend Ben was here last week. He arrived on Thursday, just in time for lunch, and flew out early Tuesday morning.  Even June misses him, I think.  She got into the habit of standing at the top of the basement stairs – our guest room is down there, a dungeon with red deep-pile carpet and faux wood paneling and an enormous oil furnace that’s as loud as a train – and yelling, Beh! Beh! Beh! until he came upstairs. We all agree that his trip was too short, but he did stay long enough to play a ukulele duet with Brandon, to get a kiss from June, to make me a Boulevardier and a great steak, to help us host a…

We have a rhythm https://orangette.net/2013/03/we-have-a-rhythm/ https://orangette.net/2013/03/we-have-a-rhythm/#comments Mon, 25 Mar 2013 01:24:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2013/03/25/we-have-a-rhythm June is six months old. She has two teeth, monstrous thighs, and is my favorite person in the world. Totally predictable, I know, but I really never thought I would say that about someone who spends most of the day drooling and pulling my hair.  Sometimes she looks at me tenderly, places a dimpled hand on either side of my face, and then lunges forward, giggling, and savagely bites my nose.  She suits me so well.  Really, she’s perfect for me.  We have a rhythm. I sent my revised manuscript to my editor in the final days of February. A few days later, we lost our manager at Delancey and Essex. Though losing a staff member always makes me and Brandon…

You know me well https://orangette.net/2012/05/you-know-me-well/ https://orangette.net/2012/05/you-know-me-well/#comments Fri, 04 May 2012 23:52:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2012/05/04/you-know-me-well My manuscript is due on June 1.  Hello from the Cave – or, as I first typed, “Hell from the Cave,” which has a nice slasher-movie ring to it.  Hi. For those keeping track, no, you are not crazy: the book was supposed to be due in March.  I had to ask for an extension, unfortunately, because of the small human under my shirt who makes me very tired, and because there’s been a difficult health situation in my family.  2012 came in roaring, and though I wish it would settle down and start acting its age, I doubt it’s going to.  I am, however, going to FINISH THIS BOOK.  If I can stay awake long enough. Each night, when…

No frosting, no ceremony https://orangette.net/2011/09/no-frosting-no-ceremony/ https://orangette.net/2011/09/no-frosting-no-ceremony/#comments Tue, 27 Sep 2011 00:04:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/09/27/no-frosting-no-ceremony We left our window open last night, and when I woke up today, there was rain on the sill! I am wearing a scarf that I made! Let the hoarding of plums commence! What I thought about saying next was, “The citrus is coming! The citrus is coming!” (In the privacy of my own head, I spout this kind of garbage the way Old Faithful does boiling water.) I decided against it, but during the thirty seconds when I was considering and then reconsidering, I remembered a walk I took with the dog a few weeks ago. A little boy down the street was having a birthday party, and from the skull-and-crossbones flags tied to the laurel hedge along the…

Her recipe box https://orangette.net/2010/05/her-recipe-box/ https://orangette.net/2010/05/her-recipe-box/#comments Sun, 02 May 2010 06:13:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/05/02/her-recipe-box Well. That was not at all what I planned for the month of April. So long, April. So long, plans. I want to get this show back on the road. I’ve missed being here, and I’ve missed you. But before we go any further, I want to offer a long overdue thank you to those who came to my readings last month. I thought I had a great time on my first tour, but somehow, I had an even better time this year, despite the fact that I was dealing with a whopping case of laryngitis and could hardly speak. I hope you could hear me, and that you enjoyed it. It made me so happy to meet you. I’ll…

What I do now https://orangette.net/2009/09/what-i-do-now/ https://orangette.net/2009/09/what-i-do-now/#comments Sun, 20 Sep 2009 21:37:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2009/09/20/what-i-do-now So, I wasn’t kidding about the black hole. But I’m sorry to have been gone from here for so long. I’ve missed you. Delancey is getting easier. As of two weeks ago, we now have a prep cook to work in the mornings, which means that instead of going in at 9 am to receive the first deliveries, Brandon can now go in around 11 am, and I go in sometime between noon and 2 pm, depending on the day’s prep list. We still get home around midnight, but it feels a lot easier than it did a couple of weeks ago. We’re getting more sleep, for one thing, but even more importantly, we know what to expect now. That’s…

A clear sign https://orangette.net/2008/08/a-clear-sign/ https://orangette.net/2008/08/a-clear-sign/#comments Tue, 26 Aug 2008 07:11:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2008/08/26/a-clear-sign I know I’m not supposed to say this, but I think fall may be coming soon. Also, and I know I’m really not supposed to say this, but I baked banana bread again. I’m so sorry, on both counts. Clearly, I have a problem. If my count is correct, this is the sixth, SIXTH, banana bread and/or cake recipe that I have written about here. Is there some sort of treatment facility for this? A Betty Ford Center for Banana Bread Dependency? I try to stop myself, but I am weak. So weak. Especially when there is honey involved, and when there are crumbly bits of cinnamon sugar on top, and when some of those crumbly bits fall onto the…
