Dips, Salsas, and Sauces – Orangette https://orangette.net Wed, 29 Jun 2016 04:52:34 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.2.2 The opposite of fancy https://orangette.net/2016/06/the-opposite-of-fancy/ https://orangette.net/2016/06/the-opposite-of-fancy/#comments Tue, 14 Jun 2016 02:57:12 +0000 http://orangette.net/?p=9567 In August of 2014 – which, for those who are counting, was twenty-two entire months ago – I mentioned my friend Natalie’s “famous cucumber dip.” A bunch of you asked for the recipe, so I e-mailed Natalie, and she sent it promptly. The recipe is not fancy. It’s the opposite of fancy. I liked that about it, and I was very excited about the new chapter of my existence that was revealing itself, an existence promising as much famous cucumber dip as I could get myself around. I was going to write about it immediately. But then a few days went by, and then more days after that, and some more after that. By then, it was sometime around New Year’s Day of…

I changed my mind https://orangette.net/2015/08/i-changed-my-mind/ https://orangette.net/2015/08/i-changed-my-mind/#comments Sun, 16 Aug 2015 20:14:00 +0000 Two Mondays ago, the night before the moving truck was due to arrive at my mother’s new (Seattle!) house with everything she owns, Brandon suggested making a celebratory dinner. My mother, it was agreed, would choose the menu. After a moment’s hesitation, she requested steak and Caesar salad. We headed out for groceries. I’m not going to go into great depth about the steak. I don’t know. I feel bored just thinking about writing it. You know how to cook steak. Right? You don’t need me. If you don’t know how, or if you want to try another method, I can tell you that we use Renee Erickson’s instructions (for indoor cooking, not grilling) on page 195-196 of her dreamy…

The satisfaction https://orangette.net/2014/10/the-satisfaction/ https://orangette.net/2014/10/the-satisfaction/#comments Tue, 07 Oct 2014 23:02:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2014/10/07/the-satisfaction In early September, a kind reader in north-central Idaho left me a comment. Her name was Michele, and her Italian prune plum tree was promising a bumper crop: did I want some? This kind of thing does not happen all the time, or ever, so I said (yelled) yes. That is how it came to pass that last week, a box showed up on our stoop, containing almost ten pounds of plums cushioned in bubble wrap. I hauled it to the table and let it sit there for a couple of days, admiring it like an expensive flower arrangement, patting it softly like June’s head, before getting down to work over the weekend, freezing a pound of halved plums for…

Every Tuesday https://orangette.net/2014/09/every-tuesday/ https://orangette.net/2014/09/every-tuesday/#comments Sat, 27 Sep 2014 04:45:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2014/09/27/every-tuesday Whoa. I got sucked into a black hole for a bit there, a (very pleasant, very festive) black hole of weddings and out-of-town visitors. Somehow it’s now September 26, and I’m glad to be alone tonight, in a quiet house, with a so-so brownie that I’ll probably eat anyway, rain falling outside and all the lamps lit. Hello! Or, OH–LO!, as June puts it. In the weeks since I was last here, Megan and Sam got married, and Gemma and Christophe came to help us celebrate, and after that, my in-laws arrived, and now we’ve got a cousin from New York and her boyfriend in the guest-room-slash-dungeon downstairs. And because there is no one who doesn’t like tacos, for the past three…

Always to acclaim https://orangette.net/2014/02/always-to-acclaim/ https://orangette.net/2014/02/always-to-acclaim/#comments Mon, 17 Feb 2014 06:12:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2014/02/17/always-to-acclaim Happy Two Days After Valentine’s Day! I hope you celebrated in style, which is more than we did. I typed most of this post on Valentine’s night, while Brandon worked at Delancey, slinging pizzas for all the lovers.  I did, however, rally to bake a banana bread.  Nothing says, I love you (or, You married your grandmother), like a banana bread on Valentine’s Day. This is not a post about banana bread, just to clarify. This is a post about lime curd.  Not lemon curd, but lime: “the superlative citrus,” as our friend Niah, who is also the bar manager of Essex, likes to say. And if it seems like I only post sweets and baked goods anymore, I know, I know,…

You don’t forget https://orangette.net/2011/07/you-dont-forget/ https://orangette.net/2011/07/you-dont-forget/#comments Mon, 18 Jul 2011 03:14:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/you-dont-forget I may be too late for strawberries. I worry about that. But on the off chance that you can still get them where you live, and that they’re still worth eating, I will say: you should try this. And hurry. If it helps to get you out of the chair – because I can see that you’re still sitting there; I have powers – repeat after Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer: “a conserve of soft berries in a barely set syrup.” A conserve of soft berries in a barely set syrup! A conserve of soft berries in a barely set syrup!!!!!!! GO. Before we start, I should admit to a problem, and that problem is jam. I love to make…

Such is the power https://orangette.net/2011/06/such-is-the-power/ https://orangette.net/2011/06/such-is-the-power/#comments Fri, 17 Jun 2011 00:49:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/17/such-is-the-power   Let the record show that, I, Molly Wizenberg, have, in this lifetime, made some ugly deviled eggs. Maybe this picture is the better approach. I seem to have come down with some sort of virus, the kind of thing that feels totally out of place in the month of June, that keeps you in your bathrobe, eating mostly toast and canned peaches, for the better part of five days. To be perfectly honest, I can’t say that I feel like eating a deviled egg right now. But I did manage to eat a bowl of cereal this morning, and that is a great improvement. I even felt well enough for a cup of coffee! Maybe, by the time you…

The whole point https://orangette.net/2009/07/the-whole-point/ https://orangette.net/2009/07/the-whole-point/#comments Wed, 22 Jul 2009 03:40:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2009/07/22/the-whole-point I am pleased to report that we are finally approaching the part of this restaurant thing when we actually get to cook. It’s kind of amazing. The construction is essentially done. There are some details left to complete, like installing acoustic paneling (to cut down on noise), hanging art and mirrors, and setting up the computer system, but we’re very close. Two of our construction workers – I’m not going to say who (rhymes with “Holly” and “Mandon”) – accidentally glued an eight-foot-tall chalkboard to the floor on Sunday, but it’s okay. It came up easily enough. We’re really very close. And we still seem to remember how to cook, which is promising, since that’s the whole point. About ten…

Something called sauce gribiche https://orangette.net/2009/05/something-called-sauce-gribiche/ https://orangette.net/2009/05/something-called-sauce-gribiche/#comments Wed, 06 May 2009 06:46:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2009/05/06/something-called-sauce-gribiche About five years ago, I think it was, I went out to dinner with my friend Keaton and ate something called sauce gribiche. I had never heard of it before, but it was a kind of coarse vinaigrette, with chopped cornichons and capers and hard-boiled eggs, and it was served over asparagus. I don’t know why I remember it so clearly, aside from the fact that I dripped some of it onto my pants, but ever since, I’ve thought about it sometimes, usually when I’m supposed to be thinking about more important things, and I’ve wanted to try making it. It took me a while, as you can see, but yesterday, I finally did. Twice. The thing is, as I…
