whole wheat – Orangette https://orangette.net Thu, 06 Jul 2017 20:09:10 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.2.2 May 7 https://orangette.net/2015/05/may-7/ https://orangette.net/2015/05/may-7/#comments Thu, 07 May 2015 22:05:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2015/05/07/may-7 One Tuesday evening in March, I went somewhat accidentally to the town of Edison, Washington, and bought a pack of graham crackers. Two weeks later, I drove back deliberately, 75 miles each way, just to buy more. Thanks to Renee Bourgault and her wonderful Breadfarm, I got to tell the story, and share the recipe, on (the newly redesigned! fancy!) Saveur.com.

I like to imagine https://orangette.net/2015/04/i-like-to-imagine/ https://orangette.net/2015/04/i-like-to-imagine/#comments Sat, 18 Apr 2015 09:26:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2015/04/18/i-like-to-imagine The only bookshelves in our house are in June’s room, one and a half walls of built-ins that bracket the space like a capital L. The previous owner had used the room as an office, as far as we can tell, and we planned to do the same. We set my desk under the window. I had just started writing Delancey then, and I pounded out the early chapters there – or, more often, avoided pounding out the early chapters by watching nuthatches flit around the giant evergreen outside. At some point, we decided that having a baby would be good idea, and to make room for her, we moved my desk to the dining room, replaced it with a crib, and hung…

A rare benefit https://orangette.net/2013/07/a-rare-benefit/ https://orangette.net/2013/07/a-rare-benefit/#comments Fri, 19 Jul 2013 21:49:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2013/07/19/a-rare-benefit I’ve started this post four different times now, on five different days. I’m already tired of it, and I still haven’t figured out how to start. Does that ever happen to you? Do you do what I do and take a “break” to raid the walk-in at Delancey for chocolate chip cookie dough? Do you tell yourself, What harm could it really do if I listened to Freedom ’90 again? Do you ever wonder if you’ve missed your chance to be a dancer in a Janet Jackson video? Shall we start this thing already? First, I want to tell you that I was elated by your response to Delancey. Totally elated. Ecstatic. Even slightly stoned. I’m still coming down from it. Thank you so very, very…

Wade way in https://orangette.net/2010/12/wade-way-in/ https://orangette.net/2010/12/wade-way-in/#comments Sat, 04 Dec 2010 09:20:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/12/04/wade-way-in November was nice, but what happened to it? Hi. Our visit to the East Coast was good and long and involved a lot of sleeping and pizza research, the common themes of our days off since Delancey came along. I wrote a story about stuffing for this fine newspaper – you know that it’s not just for Thanksgiving, right? You can eat stuffing whenever you want – and now I’m working on a story for this fine magazine. But lately, my head is very full of Possible Future Book. I want you to know that I thought long and hard before I typed that last sentence. Because now it means that I can’t chicken out. The idea of writing another…

I am sold https://orangette.net/2010/11/i-am-sold/ https://orangette.net/2010/11/i-am-sold/#comments Sat, 06 Nov 2010 05:10:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/11/06/i-am-sold I know this cookie looks wholesome. Actually, I’ll raise you one and say that it verges on homely. But this cookie speaks to me, and what it says is, Hey, baaaabe-eh. In this voice. Meet Kim Boyce’s whole wheat chocolate chip cookie. This might be my favorite chocolate chip cookie, which is an absolutely insane thing to say, because until about a week ago, I thought that title belonged, forever and ever, to the New York Times chocolate chip cookie. I don’t know what I think anymore. Let’s just call this my new favorite chocolate chip cookie and leave it at that.I first heard about this recipe from Luisa, and then Lecia mentioned it to me, too, and maybe Brian,…

It is called toast https://orangette.net/2010/08/it-is-called-toast/ https://orangette.net/2010/08/it-is-called-toast/#comments Fri, 06 Aug 2010 07:30:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/08/06/it-is-called-toast Thank you for the many cheers and kind words about our anniversaries. You are so good to us! We went to Bellingham to celebrate over the weekend – which, in our world, means Monday and Tuesday, the days when Delancey is closed – and I regret to report that the dinosaur graffiti has been painted over. There’s a cafe there, and they put in some outdoor seating, so I guess they wanted to spruce the place up. The only good news is that the graffiti was painted over badly, with white paint, so if you squint, you can still make out the curving neck of the brontosaurus. Shine on, dinosaurs! I should also report that I have made a discovery,…

Not a likely love https://orangette.net/2010/03/not-a-likely-love/ https://orangette.net/2010/03/not-a-likely-love/#comments Thu, 18 Mar 2010 08:25:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/03/18/not-a-likely-love Well, would you look at that! Yesterday was Saint Patrick’s Day, and how fitting, I’m writing about scones! Which are Irish, of course – and, well, also Scottish, and English, and generally British, but anyway, they’re Thatapproximatepartoftheworldish, at least. I should quit while I’m ahead. When I was growing up, my elementary school was near a health food store called the Earth. It was not a large place, nor was it fancy. It was not Whole Foods. It was small and low-ceilinged, lit with fluorescent tubes and lined with vitamins in brown bottles and beeswax chapstick and sesame bars in plastic wrappers, and it smelled like lentil soup. There was a cafe at one end where they served sandwiches and…

About cake https://orangette.net/2009/04/about-cake/ https://orangette.net/2009/04/about-cake/#comments Tue, 28 Apr 2009 06:57:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2009/04/28/about-cake Today, I thought it would be nice to talk about cake. Actually, that’s a lie. Today, I thought it would be nice to eat cake. That’s all. Anything else is completely optional. I’m easy to please, as long as there is cake around. Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about cake. This is not an unusual condition for me, but it happens particularly often when I’m feeling frazzled or tired or harried, right around the same time that I start listening to the easy listening station on the car radio and feeling genuinely soothed by it. It’s pretty clear that you need a good night’s sleep when “Peaceful Easy Feeling” comes on the stereo and you almost choke up, sitting…
