I didn’t mean to be gone for so long. I know what some of you were thinking, and I am delighted to report that I did not give up on blogging. I also did not die. But it’s been a long, hard, dizzying summer, I will say that, with, among other things, Herculean staffing woes at Delancey, Essex, and Dino’s. (Did you know there’s currently a shortage of restaurant cooks in a lot of cities, including Seattle? I could tell you stories.) But now that June is in school again, I’ve been able to tiptoe my way back to writing, and that’s a relief. I turned 38 last week, and that too feels good. I’ve also been cooking again, after the lazy, happy ease…

And: FUDGESICLES https://orangette.net/2014/08/and-fudgesicles/ https://orangette.net/2014/08/and-fudgesicles/#comments Fri, 29 Aug 2014 04:16:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2014/08/29/and-fudgesicles I have a child who is about to be two years old. I have a lot of thoughts on the subject, but one thing I do not have a lot of thoughts about is a second birthday party. I could take it or leave it. For one thing, June doesn’t understand birthdays yet, so it doesn’t matter to her either way. Also, I am lazier than I let on. When your kid turns one, a party feels mandatory, because you kept a small human alive for an entire year and you survived it and bells must be energetically rung. Cake must be baked! BEERS MUST BE DRUNK! I am here to report, however, that a second birthday party feels much less…

A real thrill https://orangette.net/2011/08/a-real-thrill/ https://orangette.net/2011/08/a-real-thrill/#comments Mon, 22 Aug 2011 22:10:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/08/22/a-real-thrill I’m going to tell it to you straight. When I got to the last step of this recipe and looked at the tower of dirty bowls and saucepans in the sink, I thought, This had damn well better be the best frozen yogurt the universe has ever seen. I’m not sure I would go quite that far. But it’s a very, very, very good frozen yogurt. And I can tell you that it feels especially right when eaten from a teacup, if that doesn’t make you feel too prissy. It was a happy discovery for me, because in this house, the teacups otherwise sit in the cabinet and grow cobwebs. In other words: I’m glad I made it. This recipe…

This one’s coming with me https://orangette.net/2011/06/this-ones-coming-with-me/ https://orangette.net/2011/06/this-ones-coming-with-me/#comments Mon, 27 Jun 2011 17:43:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/27/this-ones-coming-with-me On a Sunday night in June, you are required, by cosmic law, to make strawberry shortcake. I don’t know if you knew that. I just found out. There’s apparently a similar law for July, only it governs tomato-and-mayonnaise sandwiches. You’ve been warned. Last week, we had two friends visiting from Scotland. Whenever we have visitors, I tend to want to take them to lots of restaurants, because that seems like the best way to show them our city, but when jet lag is involved, it feels mean to force anyone to sit upright or speak in complete sentences after approximately mid-afternoon. So on Sunday night, after a morning visit to the farmer’s market and a long walk down to Golden…

Easy enough https://orangette.net/2011/03/easy-enough/ https://orangette.net/2011/03/easy-enough/#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 04:41:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/03/28/easy-enough We moved last Tuesday. I’m going to repeat that, because it sounds so unlikely, so inadvisable, that I know you might not believe me. I hardly believe me. But we did. We moved. Brandon is starting a second business, and I’m trying to start a second book, so, you know, la la la, let’s move. We’ve had worse ideas, but I can’t think of them right now. This is the last picture taken in our old kitchen. Our old kitchen, our old place, our old duplex, where we lived for almost five years, on a noisy street with the nocturnal neighbor who does outdoor home improvement projects by flashlight. I will miss that place, but only a little, and never…

They wake me up https://orangette.net/2011/03/they-wake-me-up/ https://orangette.net/2011/03/they-wake-me-up/#comments Fri, 04 Mar 2011 08:53:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/they-wake-me-up Lately we’ve had a lot of friends passing through, lots of changes of sheets on the guest bed. Sam has been around a bit. Ben, our friend who moved here a couple of years ago but was quickly wooed away by work, is doing a short-term gig nearby and comes around on his days off. And Ryan, who also lived here briefly and was wooed away, is flying in tonight for a visit. The bourbon in the bottle is two fingers lower than it was last week, and the apartment feels nice, lived-in. Most days, days when we don’t have house guests, I spend long stretches of time alone, working. I like the quiet. I don’t need a lot of…

But then https://orangette.net/2010/08/but-then/ https://orangette.net/2010/08/but-then/#comments Fri, 27 Aug 2010 07:49:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/08/27/but-then I can’t believe we haven’t talked about berry cobbler yet. August 27, and we haven’t talked about berry cobbler. I’ve got to fix that. For a long time, I didn’t get terribly excited about cobbler. I think you’re either a cobbler person or a crisp person, the same way that you’re either a cake person or a pie person. My mother is a crisp person, and that’s what I grew up eating. I can be swayed by crumbles as well, mostly because they’re often indistinguishable from crisps, and also because crumble is such a nice word for a dessert. It sounds exactly like it tastes. (On a side note: did you know that French speakers pronounce it crum-bell? It’s awesome.…

It’s my duty https://orangette.net/2010/06/its-my-duty/ https://orangette.net/2010/06/its-my-duty/#comments Tue, 15 Jun 2010 01:58:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/06/15/its-my-duty I’m not exactly sure how to broach this topic, so I’m going to cut right to the chase. Fennel ice cream. I had fennel ice cream for the first time almost a month ago, and I’m still thinking about it. I used to only get this way about things involving chocolate, but apparently I’m growing up, or getting weirder. Either way, I take it as a positive development. If you’ve been reading here for a while, or if you keep up with Bon Appétit, you’ve probably heard that my friend Olaiya is a knockout of a cook. She consistently finds, creates, and writes the best recipes I know. I feel very lucky to have her around, not only because she…

A nasty habit https://orangette.net/2010/01/a-nasty-habit/ https://orangette.net/2010/01/a-nasty-habit/#comments Thu, 14 Jan 2010 08:20:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2010/01/14/a-nasty-habit I have many important things to tell you. 1. I’m doing a podcast! I intended to tell you about this a week ago, but there’s been an illness in my family, and I’ve been away, and it hasn’t been a lot of fun, so, you know, let’s talk about that podcast. It’s called Spilled Milk, and I co-host it with my friend Matthew Amster-Burton. Every time we record an episode, Matthew makes me laugh until I snort, cry, hyperventilate, and/or hoot like an owl, and I hope our show does the same for you. The first episode is on the topic of fried eggs, and you can listen or download it – free! – through the Spilled Milk website, or…
