apples – Orangette https://orangette.net Sun, 12 Feb 2017 06:58:09 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.2.2 November 6 https://orangette.net/2015/11/november-6/ https://orangette.net/2015/11/november-6/#comments Fri, 06 Nov 2015 23:22:00 +0000 This one goes out to my friend Natalie. One night early last month, she and hers were over for dinner, and I made an applesauce cake with caramel glaze for dessert. As they left, she asked about the recipe, and she’s been patiently waiting for me to post it ever since. In the intervening weeks, our kitchen faucet sprung a leak – a leak that must have actually sprung a month or two before that, because by the time we noticed it, it had thoroughly saturated all the wooden surfaces below and around it, making them buckle and curl like waves on an ocean, a special ocean that smells like rot. We called Natalie and Michael, because they are handy…

That word is eat https://orangette.net/2014/04/that-word-is-eat/ https://orangette.net/2014/04/that-word-is-eat/#comments Mon, 07 Apr 2014 08:08:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2014/04/07/that-word-is-eat June has mastered a new word, and that word is eat.  It’s one of many things I like about her. Because Brandon works most nights, I get up with June most mornings. I have developed a condition that my friend Andrea calls Bionic Mom Hearing, so I sleep with earplugs and a pillow over my head. It’s a sight I think you would enjoy. But she manages to wake me up anyway (MAAA! MAAA!), so I get a bottle of milk from the fridge (prepared the night before, a small gift to my future self), retrieve her from her crib (“UP! UP!”), carry her across the hall to our bed, lie down and listen to her little mouth working at the…

This one does something interesting https://orangette.net/2011/02/this-one-does-something-interesting/ https://orangette.net/2011/02/this-one-does-something-interesting/#comments Mon, 21 Feb 2011 07:29:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/02/21/this-one-does-something-interesting In the days since we last spoke, I’ve flown to Oklahoma and back. I’ve introduced my mother to 24. I’ve made Cafe Lago meatballs with my mother, braised a pan of endive and serrano ham with my mother, and put away a couple of Negronis, also with my mother. I’ve baked a coffee cake using a tin of baking powder from my mother’s cabinet that, you know, it turns out, expired in 2006. I’ve thrown away a coffee cake. I’ve filed and paid our 2010 income taxes! I’ve had a toothache! I’ve sent off my book proposal! I’m using a lot of exclamation points! And because of this second-to-last item, because you’ve been such cheerful, cheering, much-needed companions in Book…

Outline of a Theory of Cabbage https://orangette.net/2005/01/outline-of-a-theory-of-cabbage/ https://orangette.net/2005/01/outline-of-a-theory-of-cabbage/#comments Thu, 13 Jan 2005 07:04:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2005/01/13/outline-of-a-theory-of-cabbage Be warned: I’m baring my geek stripes. If you’re of weak constitution, please avert your eyes. Since our lengthy discussion of soufflé, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about cabbage. After all, whenever I’m plotting a soufflé for dinner, cabbage inevitably shows up, usually bringing its posse of caraway seeds, vinegar, and an apple or two. It doesn’t take much to convince me to eat this humble crucifer, and anyway, the unctuous, dairy-rich egginess of a cheese soufflé truly has no better match than the sweet-tart earthiness of braised cabbage. I think a lot about these sorts of things, and about social science. And that’s where things get geeky. Today, while riding the bus home from work and school,…
