Thanksgiving – Orangette https://orangette.net Fri, 01 Jan 2016 00:15:52 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.2.2 Like he did https://orangette.net/2014/11/like-he-did/ https://orangette.net/2014/11/like-he-did/#comments Fri, 21 Nov 2014 09:24:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2014/11/21/like-he-did The three of us have that hanger-onner of a virus that’s going around. The past two nights, I’ve coughed myself to sleep in the basement guest room, and as anyone who’s ever coughed herself to sleep can tell you, it’s slow going. I use the time to think about pressing issues like how much I like the taste of original Ricola, or how it could be that Alice’s feet smell so exactly like buttered popcorn, or how much I prefer haunted, unsmiling, True Detective-era Matthew McConaughey over other Matthew McConaugheys, even with the long hair that makes him a ringer for my uncle. Or, if I’m really on my game, I use the time to write in my head. Two nights…

From now on https://orangette.net/2013/12/from-now-on/ https://orangette.net/2013/12/from-now-on/#comments Fri, 20 Dec 2013 04:35:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2013/12/20/from-now-on Our friend Ben was here last week. He arrived on Thursday, just in time for lunch, and flew out early Tuesday morning.  Even June misses him, I think.  She got into the habit of standing at the top of the basement stairs – our guest room is down there, a dungeon with red deep-pile carpet and faux wood paneling and an enormous oil furnace that’s as loud as a train – and yelling, Beh! Beh! Beh! until he came upstairs. We all agree that his trip was too short, but he did stay long enough to play a ukulele duet with Brandon, to get a kiss from June, to make me a Boulevardier and a great steak, to help us host a…

But the soup https://orangette.net/2013/11/but-the-soup/ https://orangette.net/2013/11/but-the-soup/#comments Fri, 01 Nov 2013 22:39:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2013/11/01/but-the-soup Would you look at that! While trying, and failing, to start this post about squash soup, I accidentally ate an entire chocolate chip cookie dough ball from the Delancey walk-in! Let’s get right to it. I’ve been wanting to tell you about this soup for more than a week now, but a certain crazy-haired dancing maniac of a young person is getting a molar, or something, and has been waking up veeeerrrrrry early and then spending a large portion of the day crawl-running around the house/park/bathtub/Delancey, panting, grunting, and generally looking and acting a lot like Animal. After she goes to bed, I make myself a drink, warm up some soup, open a book, close the book, and sleep like a dead person.…

They wake me up https://orangette.net/2011/03/they-wake-me-up/ https://orangette.net/2011/03/they-wake-me-up/#comments Fri, 04 Mar 2011 08:53:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/03/04/they-wake-me-up Lately we’ve had a lot of friends passing through, lots of changes of sheets on the guest bed. Sam has been around a bit. Ben, our friend who moved here a couple of years ago but was quickly wooed away by work, is doing a short-term gig nearby and comes around on his days off. And Ryan, who also lived here briefly and was wooed away, is flying in tonight for a visit. The bourbon in the bottle is two fingers lower than it was last week, and the apartment feels nice, lived-in. Most days, days when we don’t have house guests, I spend long stretches of time alone, working. I like the quiet. I don’t need a lot of…

This one does something interesting https://orangette.net/2011/02/this-one-does-something-interesting/ https://orangette.net/2011/02/this-one-does-something-interesting/#comments Mon, 21 Feb 2011 07:29:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2011/02/21/this-one-does-something-interesting In the days since we last spoke, I’ve flown to Oklahoma and back. I’ve introduced my mother to 24. I’ve made Cafe Lago meatballs with my mother, braised a pan of endive and serrano ham with my mother, and put away a couple of Negronis, also with my mother. I’ve baked a coffee cake using a tin of baking powder from my mother’s cabinet that, you know, it turns out, expired in 2006. I’ve thrown away a coffee cake. I’ve filed and paid our 2010 income taxes! I’ve had a toothache! I’ve sent off my book proposal! I’m using a lot of exclamation points! And because of this second-to-last item, because you’ve been such cheerful, cheering, much-needed companions in Book…

And then the cake came forth https://orangette.net/2004/08/and-then-the-cake-came-forth/ https://orangette.net/2004/08/and-then-the-cake-came-forth/#comments Mon, 09 Aug 2004 01:11:00 +0000 https://elitemporaryblog.wordpress.com/2004/08/09/and-then-the-cake-came-forth Sundays are nice. My New York Times and I are very cozy on the couch. Last night Kate and I made dinner and watched the boats sail in and out of Elliott Bay from her 18th-floor downtown apartment. It was an excellent reason to eat lots of bittersweet chocolate and Plugra, but you can rest assured that we ate our vegetables first. We traipsed down to Pike Place Market just before closing and snatched up a bell pepper, red and gold tomatoes, a cucumber, two yams, and three sausages from Uli’s: spinach bratwurst, hot Italian, and lamb. Back home, we opened a bottle of white that happened to be lurking in the fridge, and, glasses in hand, put our bare…
